BS 7533 principles applied to driveways

Guidance for modular pavements, applied through sound engineering practice on every surface.

BS 7533 provides recognised guidance for the design and construction of modular pavements, surfaces built from clay, concrete or natural stone paving units such as block paving and flags. It is not a certification scheme, and it does not govern resin-bound or tarmac construction as a structural design standard. It is one part of the wider body of pavement-engineering practice we draw on.

What BS 7533 actually covers

The standard sets out guidance for sub-base construction, bedding, jointing and edge restraint specifically for modular block, concrete and natural stone paving. Where we install block paving, relevant BS 7533 principles are applied where appropriate, alongside Tobermore's manufacturer specifications and the ground conditions found on site.

How we apply pavement-engineering principles to every surface

Resin-bound and tarmac surfaces are not covered by BS 7533, but the underlying engineering logic, an engineered sub-base matched to loading and ground conditions, geotextile separation where specified, positive edge restraint, and drainage designed before levels are set, applies across all surface types. On resin systems this sits alongside the complete Vuba manufacturer specification. On tarmac it is specified around anticipated loading, formation condition, drainage, layer thickness and appropriate asphalt materials.

The principles we apply, whatever the surface

  • Sub-base engineered to the loading, depth and grading matched to vehicle weight and ground conditions
  • Geotextile separation between subgrade and sub-base where specified, to reduce contamination and pumping
  • Load-path design, every layer contributes to distributing load down to the subgrade
  • Positive edge restraint on every course, so no course is free to spread under load
  • Drainage as a design input, not an afterthought, falls, gullies and permeability assessed before excavation

Why it matters on a domestic driveway

A domestic driveway is under load every day, family cars, a tradesman's van, an occasional delivery or skip lorry, all on the same surface. Formation condition, anticipated loading, drainage and existing ground conditions are assessed during survey and excavation, and where ground conditions or loading warrant it, additional bearing-capacity testing or specialist pavement design may be specified. Applying sound pavement-engineering principles, whether or not BS 7533 itself applies to the surface in question, is what separates a driveway built to last from one that isn't.
